LINDA JAMES
visual artist and educator

Linda James has been a visual artist for over 40 years. Over that time, she has applied her talents to graphic design, fiber art, and painting. James received her BFA in painting from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1971. After co-owning a weaving studio in the late 70s, she devoted time to raising a family and studying medical herbalism in the Northeast. A move to Seattle brought her focus back to painting in 2009.  She now commits all of her time to painting and teaching watercolor as a vehicle for personal expression. Besides teaching at Gage Academy of Art and through her studio, Linda also offers individual mentoring sessions.

In her painting, James draws from her background in herbalism and energy healing. Working primarily in watercolor, she focuses on the natural world and energies seen and unseen, inspired by images from the Hubble telescope, aboriginal dreamtime paintings, and sacred geometry. Color has always been at the heart of her work, with early influence from the color field painters of the 50s and 60s.

In 2021, I was contacted by Grith Staagard, a Danish artist and art therapist, who wrote me because she resonated with my work. We immediately formed a strong connection around our share interest in art as a vehicle for transcendence. Grith’s watercolor work is quite remarkable. Please take a look at her website. Later that year, Grith asked to interview me for her website.
